KAICIID and UNAOC Renew Partnership to Foster Global Peace and Dialogue
KAICIID and UNAOC Extend their Cooperation Until 2028
On the margins of the 10th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), held in Cascais, Portugal, KAICIID Secretary General Dr. Zuhair Alharthi and UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for UNAOC Miguel Ángel Moratinos signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding extending their long-standing partnership for a further four years, until 2028.
KAICIID and UNAOC have collaborated since 2017, when they first formalised their shared commitment to promoting intercultural and interreligious dialogue. This latest renewal builds on two previous MoU extensions and deepens cooperation across four thematic areas: capacity building and youth engagement for interreligious and intercultural dialogue; the implementation of the Plan of Action for the safeguarding of religious sites; peacebuilding and conflict transformation, including efforts to counter hate speech; and human rights and reconciliation programmes.
The renewal is directly relevant to EULEMA’s own institutional work. Both KAICIID and UNAOC are key interlocutors for European Muslim leaders engaged in structured dialogue with international organisations. Their renewed cooperation provides a stronger multilateral framework for the advocacy that EULEMA and its member imams and scholars pursue across European institutions.
The signing took place at an event that brought together governments, civil society representatives, and religious communities from across the globe — a reminder that sustainable peace requires patient, sustained dialogue, and that the organisations dedicated to this mission must work in concert.
