Biography
Imam Tarafa Baghajati was born in Damascus, Syria (1961) and has lived in Vienna, Austria since 1986. He graduated as a civil engineer from the Polytechnic University of Timișoara.
Leadership & Institutional Roles
- Imam in Vienna and Cultural Officer of the Islamic Community in Vienna (since 2010)
- Secretary, Muslim-Jewish Leadership Council Europe (MJLC)
- Co-founder of the Initiative muslimischer ÖsterreicherInnen (IMÖ, 1999), one of Austria’s leading Muslim civil society organisations, focused on anti-racism, human rights, and the participation of Muslims in Austrian public life
Engagement
Active for decades on issues of immigration, anti-racism, Muslim women’s rights, and opposition to Islamophobia. Representative of Austrian Islam in European interreligious dialogue forums and signatory to joint EULEMA statements on Ukraine (2022) and other humanitarian causes.
